March just flew by didn’t it?
Construction Marketing UK saw some major Social Media developments and changes during March. We said at the end of 2010 that this year was going to be a major year for Social Media and Social Media marketing and the momentum hasn’t slowed 1 iota!!
We started the month 07/03/2011 with a look at why Blogs are now so much more popular than websites. The answer is clearly Social Media connectivity, CLICK HERE to find out why your old website is letting you down. If you want traffic, you’ve just got to get connected to Social Media!
If you want to know how to Blog, CLICK HERE , this post tells you how to get started, what to do and what NOT to do! Blogging is extremely effective for any business, whatever sector you are in and whatever you do, but you have to do it right. If you can’t spare the time or don’t have the skills, use Facebook or Twitter to get your message across; it’s not quite as effective, but it’s much quicker. (Or call us and we’ll do it all for you!)
Traditional marketing often gets ignored with all the excitement about Social Media, however our post about Generation Y loving direct mail and Social Media caused quite a stir, CLICK HERE to see what it’s all about. Let us know how you feel about traditional marketing, we would be pleased to hear your opinion!
The biggest surprise is that our mega successful Social Media satire series of posts, has been SO much more popular than lots of our more serious, business related posts. I guess it just shows that people really do need a good laugh to release the stress of contemporary life. Laugh and the world laughs with you and all that…
We’ve had excellent feedback and comments on our Blog, on Facebook and loads of RT’s and mentions on Twitter. I would like to personally thank everyone who spared us some of their time, we know just how valuable it is nowadays!
We posted 2 Social Media satire editions:

Here’s an example of next weeks Social Media satire:

We saw some great new developments in March, Social Media tools such as Buffer, Oorook and the new Google button came onto the scene. (If you want to know more, just call us!)

We also saw some major developments with Facebook (again) and with LinkedIn and we hear that Twitter may also be making some changes!! It’s all happening!!
Despite continued mainstream press negativity, Social Media advocates Miller Homes carried out a survey of 5000 people and the results said home buying sentiment was very positive despite the economy! Who’s right?? To read more about the Miller Homes survey CLICK HERE.
The news for the construction sector was pretty mixed as always, the nuclear industry is rallying to save the new build sector, the recent budget sees the government providing £250 million for first time buyers and a good sign to me (having worked in that sector in the Middle East) is that month-on-month production of concrete blocks is up 49%. You don’t produce 49% more blocks just to stock pile them, do you? Not nowadays, anyway!

More good news, it also seems that the rail and commercial sectors will see things picking up towards the middle of the year. Way back in the middle of a very gloomy 2010, I said that commercial regeneration would be a major force in getting the economy going again and I still strongly believe that! There are a lot of old developments that need bringing up to date and lots of new build to finish off. During the ‘boom years’, a lot of people were more focused on creating landmark new build projects and putting themselves ‘on the map’, but now the mood is clearly determined by financial constraints and the focus is more on value and to me that’s a good thing. It might take an influx of foreign investors to get the ball rolling, but there’s some good opportunities around if you’re imaginative, brave and have deep pockets! The government’s recent decision to make it significantly easier for offshore investors and pension funds to invest in UK real estate is clearly a move in the right direction.

Due to the huge demand and the shortage of new build residential projects, it wouldn’t shock me at all, to see continued growth in change of use from commercial and industrial to residential. Over the last few decades we’ve seen major change of use and redevelopment of trendy old Victorian factories and warehouses, why not make some major moves in the 60′s and 70′s commercial stock? Right location required, of course, but these empty or ignored developments are often well linked to roads and transport services, have lots of space for amenities and tons of parking and space for recreation. With some of the quality cladding and roofing products available from the likes of Kingspan and some very simple fitting out, these vast properties could become the latest chic Part L compliant living accommodation very easily!
We finished the month with a celebration of FREE advertising via Social Media, yes, that’s right, FREE! Not only FREE, but advertising your company’s services and products to 100,000,000 business professionals. What an offer, how much would you have to pay for that expose with traditional advertising?
