Social Media satire: Social Media reality, Empire Avenue, Klout and Zite!

I don’t have an iPad or an iPhone as yet, despite being offered a free one by various spammers, but I was delighted to find out from my Social Media friend Gemma Thompson that this blog is now featured in iPad’s Zite magazine. Gemma is from Social Media Illumination and when she was kind enough to mention me in her recent blog post and she referred to me by my Twitter handle and Empire Avenue name MARKETINGM8.  I don’t know very much about Zite and if you’ve got an iPad you’ll know much more than I do, but it’s great news that my potential audience is growing.  Now there’s another reason my Alexa score is continually improving!

iPad & iPhone providing Blog links to their users!

I continue to hear from people with great websites but no traffic!  Get connected to Social Media, get the word out and communicate!  Communication adds value.  If you don’t tell people about your services and products they won’t become your customers!  Simple, right?  Good marketing solutions are often very obvious!

I spoke to someone who proudly announced he had a new website recently, I said he’d be better off with a blog because Google just loves blogs!  He smiled and said it was OK, because he’s connected to Social Media.  Out of professional curiosity, I looked at his new website and it wasn’t too bad and yes, it has got one Facebook and one Twitter icon, that’s OK but it barely scratches the surface.  Look at this blog, see how connected it is!  People are lazy, make it easy for them to connect and not just to one or two Social Media platforms with a couple of solitary icons!

Social Media is NOT rocket science!

Social Media is NOT rocket science, if you can send an email, you can use Social Media, I promise you it is that easy.  Setting up a blog can take some doing and it all takes time to manage properly, but the basic principles are very basic!  Please remember, Social Media is NOT like IT!

However, knowing what to do and managing a Social Media campaign well is NOT so easy, sending out a few Tweets asking people to buy your products will not provide you with a lot of interest!  Random acts of marketing with Social Media are pointless and a marketing plan needs to be made and used properly.

Start at the beginning with Social Media

My recent Social Media seminar experience at Fynn Valley golf club was a real eye opener and one of the recurring questions was ‘Where do I begin with Social Media?’

Easy! Most businesses have a website and if the content is of an acceptable standard it can be used, it has value despite the website’s probable lack of traffic.  Therefore a blog is the best way to start, use what you have, establish a blog as a base and connect everything else to it! Simple!

WordPress is the way to go and for the best blogs you need to be self hosted, which isn’t that difficult!  If you are not self hosted you won’t have the benefit of plug ins for SEO, analytics, anti spam, email contact options, auto YouTube and Vimeo video loading, ‘sexybookmarks’, WordPress backup, and much more!  Take a good look at this blog and see how connected it is and ask yourself how you compare?

Social Capital, do you have any??

When my Klout score dropped from 61 to 13 last week, I confess that I was a tad emotional.  Despite what some people say, ‘social capital’ does have some bearing on Social Media professionals because it’s an indication of their Social Media engagement and this only comes with lots of hard work.  My daughter is 13 years old, I think she’s too young to be on Facebook but I do allow her to connect with friends on Twitter (for some reason it seems safer??) her Klout score is 30 and she sends Tweets a few times a day, most days. To her it’s great fun and I think she likes to be involved in what her dad is constantly going on about.  Her Klout score does not make her an authority or a Social Media guru, but it shows that she is engaged regularly with Social Media on some level.

All aboard for Empire Avenue...

There’s not a day passes without someone else I know joining Empire Avenue and if you have the time and you like Social Media and networking, you really should join.

If you want to join use this link and get a good start.  Need to know what to do?  I’ll show you, just Tweet me or give me a ‘Shoutout’!  After just one month of participation I am the UK’s top business when it comes to dividends and share price. (For now!)

Addictive?? Oh yes!

Do I think Empire Avenue is addictive??  Yes, in fact a resounding yes and for a number of reasons.  Many people are feeling a little deflated since the recession began in 2008 and that’s a few ago now!  Empire Avenue offers a great chance to feel good about your achievements and of course, some people will get carried away with the whole idea. Don’t forget, it is NOT real money, Empire Avenue is a just game but I do believe that the networking aspects of it do offer significant value!

If we remember that Empire Avenue is not real life, we’ll be fine!

Tweet me!

My conclusion based on recent events is the same as the conclusion I’ve always had and I had this conclusion long before I got involved in Social Media, ‘Communication adds value!’.

Twitter brings a lot of traffic to my blog, as does StumbleUpon, LinkedIn and Facebook, this happens because I communicate a lot.  I use Buffer and I also Tweet naturally and not just my own content,  I frequent blogging groups, Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, Empire Avenue, I use Facebook marketing techniques and I have videos made and I put them on YouTube.  Do all these methods work?  Yes!  (Having said that, I do put a lot of hours into my business.)

Would they get your company brand and message out there too??

Yes!  They would!

About Peter

British born Peter L Masters has been a writer for many years and Cut Limbo is his first published novel. Back in the late 70's and early 80's he was the singer/songwriter for cult punk band Spasmodic Caress. The controversial "Hit the Dead" track was released by 4AD in 1980 and decades later re-released by US punk band The Spits. Subsequent tracks such as "Waiting" "SPG" and "Ambition" are now on YouTube. The inspiration for Cut Limbo comes from a combination of experiences gained whilst travelling and living in Europe and Asia, a love of the punk rock era and everything it stood for, and a passion for books and movies. Cut Limbo was originally written by Peter as a screenplay and inspired by classic movies such as Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Jackie Brown and Get Shorty. (A big thanks to Quentin Tarantino and Elmore Leonard) The story of what went on at Schipol airport, Amsterdam, just had to be told.
