Did you love the summer of social media?? Social Media satire edition 24.
I did, it was a great summer, despite the British weather. OK, we did have some social media sadness, when the politicians blamed social media and Blackberry for the London and UK riots, but that was addressed in a previous post. I intend to look at London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, and his use of social media later this week; it’s very interesting to see how politician’s are moving with the times! (Incidentally, Boris’ Klout score is slightly higher than mine at 74.)
It seems that the UK riots were the sad product of a troubled and divided society and I’m not trying to make light of the situation by any means, as a law abiding citizen and a parent of 2 teenagers, these are difficult and worrying times. The judges, as well as the politicians, should try hard to address the real problems and keep everything in perspective.
I was amazed at how brazen many of the rioters were despite the CCTV cameras and more amazed at them posting their antics on social media. Didn’t they consider the consequences?
Don’t forget that when you are sober, social media is an amazing way to communicate, BUT please be careful of what you do and say and the choice of photos and videos you upload onto Facebook, Google+, Twitter and YouTube! Remember, your future bosses and your grandma have got access to social media too.
Using Twitter, Google+, Facebook and Subjot to communicate with people is wonderful, but don’t forget that it doesn’t have to end there! I’ve had some great Skype calls recently and I’ve really got to know some of my fellow bloggers and Empire Avenue friends. Talking to people in ‘the real world’ is simply taking social media a step further and it gives you the opportunity to get to know the difference between the ‘digital deviants’ and the ‘social media superstars’. The ‘digital deviants’ don’t tend to mix well, there are many reasons and I’ll let you guess what they are.
I have noticed a new trend emerging on Empire Avenue and it’s a very exciting one!
Subjot and Xeeme are just 2 of the many new social media platforms that have attracted a lot of attention recently. I know Chris Carella and Axel Shultze and I also know that they both benefit considerably from being involved in the international social media scene on Empire Avenue. If you weren’t aware, Empire Avenue is a superb hub for social media networking, so why wouldn’t you and your social media start-up want to be there? But you have got to ‘play’ the game properly, you can’t do a Jane Fonda or a BMW or you’ll just crash and burn, however, if you use Empire Avenue properly and engage with people as you are expected to, you’ll do fine! If you need help, call me!
I’ve spoken to lots of company owners and a host of directors about social media and they don’t seem too concerned about the positive benefits that social media can bring, the positive benefits, I guess, are very obvious.
Their main concerns are often the negative aspects! From a professional perspective, to some degree, I can understand them and if I were given the opportunity to explain the new ‘safety nets’ that MarketingM8 can now apply to any social media connectivity, I’m 100% sure they would feel more comfortable.
OK, it’s not FREE and most great things aren’t, but if necessary, I can monitor every single Tweet, social media comment or mention about YOUR company on blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Subjot, LinkedIn, YouTube, wherever, right across the social media board!
In ‘real time’ I can find out who said what, exactly who they are, where they’re from, who they’re connected to, what social media connectivity they have and how much social media influence they have! Not bad hey? It’s like being a social media secret agent.
I can nip issues in the bud and deal with negative press, instantly! So you don’t have to be like Sony and suffer and you don’t have to be like BMW and get labelled arrogant or outdated.
Social media benefits far outweigh the negative issues and if you’ve got a professional contingency plan, you are FULLY protected. Let MarketingM8 provide and maintain your social media insurance.

We can both be certain that social media is not a bad thing and yes you have to keep on top of it! Social media although young has already brought down some bad people and governments!. Sony were sitting ducks when they were hacked and I don’t think they put a foot wrong but will and have learned a’lot from it, also I found it pretty funny though when Spencer Kelly on BBC Click said angrily “whoever is doing it just stop!”.
There are things I’ve learned and decided upon this summer,
Engagement with the audience is key and I hate social media spammers so it’s all about content and I’m finally going back to my roots soon with podcasting and radio so things are going to get very interesting over the next few months
.
Hi Peter,
This is a fantastic read. I have recently taken a look at Subjot and Xeeme and they really have some very interesting new ways for Social Media!
This is definitely a similar ride we are on with Buffer.
Just Buffered this post for sure Peter
Hi Leo,
I thought you’d like Subjot & Xeeme!
Sorry I forgot to mention you guys as a social media start up, I’ll make it up to you in tomorrow’s post!!
I wasn’t sure whether to add the photo of Guy Kawasaki’s signed book? It’s like my ‘Thank You’ Tweet from Michael Stelzner, it doesn’t mean that much to people who aren’t into social media 24/7/365, right?
Great interview, thanks again for your time!
All the very best, Peter
Hi Peter,
Social media indeed have a lot of benefits to businesses. But for every benefits there are always risks or disadvantages. However, if done properly, I believe social media can be a very effective tool. Maybe it is just too early for businessmen to conclude that social media is the future of marketing.
Hi Alex,
I think social media has more than proved itself, but it is only one tool in the marketing mix. To me, it’s one of the most cost effective and can make an old static website into something of real value.
I would say that one of the most common questions I get asked is why doesn’t my website get any or much traffic and the answer is simple, because they never change. Not only that but on many older sites the content is boring despite an often good design.
Social media though can only help companies with good services and products, social media is not a remedy.
Social media MUST be used properly to show good results. Please check out some of my earlier posts, they’re sure to be of interest to you and feel free to call or Tweet me if you have any questions. My advice is FREE!
All the very best, Peter

Hi Peter,
Sorry I just saw your reply to my comment. Cost effective is indeed the right term and I quite agree with you. Social media is only one tool but it is not the ultimate business solution. Yes, I’ve gone through some of your older posts and they’re quite informative and helpful.
