Nokia: The tops on Empire Avenue
It wasn’t that long ago I was writing about BMW’s big fail with social media due to their complete lack of engagement on Empire Avenue. I looked to see how they were doing today and as far as I could see they’re no longer trading.
It was a sad story that BMW presented and it made it clear that even some of the wealthiest and most high profile corporations still don’t quite understand the basic principles of social media.
However, as a complete contrast we have Nokia, another corporate Empire Avenue stock that I’ve owned for a while and today I just happened to notice what a great job they’ve made of their social media campaign! These guys have got it ALL right and I am very, very impressed and that doesn’t happen very often!
Not only are Nokia very well connected to just about everything they need to be on social media, but their engagement is prolific: 348 Empire Avenue actions TODAY!! Now, that’s doing it right! Plus, they’ve got 12 blogs connected, with 81 blog posts recorded this week alone, now that’s using social media properly. If only poor old BMW had performed this well and the sad thing is, they could have done very easily, MarketingM8 could have done it all for them and it wouldn’t have cost that much!
This is ALL good for Nokia, lots of activity across the Empire Avenue board, unlike BMW, Nokia can hold their corporate heads up very high!
But Nokia aren’t just good on Empire Avenue…
Once again, Nokia gets it right on Twitter, 122,000+ Twitter fans, lots of Twitter activity and Nokia are on nearly 4,000 lists! Plus, their Klout score is pretty high at 73, this says quite a bit to me and even those Klout doubters must accept that it adds a little credibility to Nokia. BMW’s Klout score is 54 and that says a lot too for such a high profile corporation.
Nokia’s Facebook page is quality too and that’s probably why they’ve had over 4,000,000 likes! The content is great and happy Nokia fans consistently add 100′s of comments to the vast majority of posts, it’s ALL good!
Nokia’s YouTube channel screams of quality and a good understanding of social media too!
Nokia does well with the numbers too: over 5,000,000 views, total upload views in excess of 65,000,000 and nearly 39,000 subscribers! That’s doing social media right! Check out the video for the Nokia N9.
I have often said that any business should have a blog as a base and LinkedIn as a social media start and of course Nokia have done these both very well. The Nokia blog is well designed, with great copy, great photos and lots of social media connectivity!
So, Nokia shows the corporate world what using social media successfully is all about, it’s not difficult and it’s NOT rocket science, but it can present you as a real winner, as in the case of Nokia or a complete loser like BMW. Which would your corporation prefer?
If you want to be a real winner with social media call MarketingM8, we can build your social media profile and maintain it for you! Yes, that’s right, we can do it ALL for you! It’s good to see big companies doing it right for a change.
I hope you get a free phone from them for all the publicity

Good to see Nokia have the same Klout score as me
I think it’s no surprise that Nokia are doing well on social media being a tech company you would expect them to be bigger on the web but as you say they are doing it in such away that they are the signal not the noise. I guess BMW must still be using the old anologue frequency or something.
(you shall be expecting some Nokia Merchandise through the post soon LOL)
Hi Jon, Nokia’s Klout score is 73 and that’s pretty good!
I think they’re doing a great job and it good to see a company leading and in a very positive way. Not just leading because they can afford to spend a lot of money but leading because they understand social media and what it means.
I agree that it’s a tragic waste that BMW just blew it so badly, they don’t seem bothered in the least and that makes it even sadder!
I’d love some Nokia merchandise but I’m not holding my breath!
All the very best Jon, thanks for your comments as always, Peter

I love to see this kind of thing Peter. Nokia is doing it right, for sure! I too have the same Klout score, now I need to work on that Twitter following, lol!
Hello Lynn,
Thanks for the encouragement and support as always!
I have had a pretty hectic few weeks but things appear (so far) a little calmer now and I’m almost back to normal. I just need to get my blog readership up to
previous levels!
I think you’ll like next week’s post about the restrictions of permission marketing, I’m looking forward to people’s comments on that controversial issue!
Have a great Sunday, all the very best, Peter

Hi Peter,
All their portals in all the platforms you mentioned are well done – their Facebook page, You Tube Channel and blog are especially top notch. Clearly, they are doing something very right.
But I don’t know that I necessarily agree that all that blog posting and huge amounts of other posting are a good thing unless most of it is them actually engaging with their twitter followers or facebook fans. Too much posting can overwhelm someone’s news feed or Twitter stream. And 81 blog posts in a week? Why? It keeps up their EA scores, but sometimes I feel EA rewards content farms and massive activity for its own sake. I would rather see fewer really high quality postings instead of more postings that amount to so much blather from individuals AND companies. Just sayin.
Hello Susan, great to see you here!
Fair comment about content farms and I used to think Empire Avenue rewarded activity just for its own sake, which is over promoting engagement but I read this weekend about someone on EAv losing divs for too much activity! How about that?
I agree that content is OK but good content is favorite and I do see a lot of blogs with the ‘same old, same old’ content, but maybe that’s just ‘newbies’ finding their feet? I look back on some of my original posts and they weren’t that exciting or original sometimes.
It’s always good to hear people’s comments on posts and I thank you for your time, all the very best, Peter

Great post! Thanks so much for mentioning Conversations!
Hi, Phil!
It’s a pleasure and a well deserved mention!
So many people are still not quite getting how to use social media that seeing it used so well needs to be held up as a great example!
Tim seems pleased about the way things are going on Empire Avenue too and I’m hoping someone as big a Nokia will ask me to help them! I’m waiting for the call…
All the very best, Peter
